The Luxury Network International Africa Launch

The Luxury Network Launches in Sandton

The Luxury market in South Africa and Africa at large is undergoing a radical shift in the right direction due to the vision of two prominent and insightful businessmen - Jeremy Nel, CEO of LUXURY BRANDS, & Co-owner/ Director, Xolisa Gaca.

Together these two extraordinary mavericks have proven themselves a force to be reckoned with, having acquired the rights for Africa to manage The Luxury Network International – the world’s leading luxury B2B affinity marketing, partnerships and events group with 17 international offices (including Johannesburg and Cape Town) and over 250 luxury brand members, growing by over 20 new companies per month around the globe.

The 25 April 2013 marked the auspicious introduction of The Luxury Network to 16 carefully selected, potential members including American Express, Burberry, Ducati, Mala Mala Private Game Reserve, Quintessentially and Virgin Atlantic’s Ulusaba Private Game Reserve.
The exclusive event took place at the exquisite Daytona Showroom in Sandton, where existing and potential members mingled and networked the evening away amongst McLarens, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces and Aston Martins.

Guests were treated to the opportunity of winning half a carat diamond to the value of R 16 000 from Uwe Koetter, a Visconti pen valued at R 6000 (both won by Nombini Mehlomakulu from Ogilvy) and a 2 night stay for 2 at the KarkloofSafari Spa, valued at R 36 000 (won by ElnaDennings of Decorex).

On arrival, each guest was given a glass of Champagne containing a Cubic Zirconia, which, when presented to the Uwe Koetter team, was measured for size, with just six individuals qualifying with a potential diamond. Each stone was tested by a diamond screening device, which revealed that the true ½ carat diamond was in possession of NombiniMehlomakulu of Ogilvy.

Special thanks to the following Luxury Network members who contributed greatly to the evening:

The Daytona Group, Constantia Glen, International Wine Co, Evian, Uwe Koetter Jewellers and LIVEOUTLOUD.

Additional thanks go to;
Moemas Catering for their outstanding canapés and deserts
Peroni for their bar and beverages

Luring Luxury Brands

The growing number of high-net-worth individuals in Africa offers a compelling opportunity for proprietors of luxurious brands seeking new markets.

The spate of oil and gas discoveries on the continent is fuelling economic growth and spawning a set of super-wealthy individuals with expensive taste in countries such as Nigeria, Angola, Ghana and Mozambique. According to Capgemini’s World Wealth Report 2012, the total investable wealth of high-net-worth individuals in Africa totalled $1.1-trillion by 2011.

Michael Lieblich, a contributing analyst at Euromonitor International, said with growth slowing in India and China, it was essential that other markets were explored. "As with any industry, being the first to offer a brand offers the opportunity to gain the much-coveted first-mover advantage," he said.

With 60%, or about 71,000, of Africa’s millionaires in South Africa, the country has the continent’s most developed luxury retail sector. Late last year, global consultancy Bain said South Africa’s luxury goods market was expected to grow between 20% and 30% over the next five years.

Apart from South Africa’s affluent, rising fortunes in other African countries have also contributed to the sales uptick of luxury goods and services, as big spenders flock to boutiques in Johannesburg and Cape Town because their home markets are still comparatively small.

Claudia D’Arpizio, a Bain partner in Milan, said South Africa would continue to attract international brands, and the potential for luxury players elsewhere on the continent was "big". Despite the complexities of doing business, logistical risks and the lack of suitable real estate, opportunities in Africa are still proving tempting for yield-hungry investors.

Ermenegildo Zegna, which the makes made-to-measure suits worn by Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Robert De Niro, will open a store in Nigeria this year. German fashion house Hugo Boss already has a presence in several countries including Nigeria, Mozambique, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa. Other luxury players such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Fendi, Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo have stores in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

However, the upmarket trappings favoured by African consumers are not limited to clothing, handbags and "bling" — spending lavishly on alcohol and fast cars is also on the rise.

In 2011, Nigerians drank 752,879 bottles of bubbly, more than were consumed in Russia or Mexico, according to Euromonitor International. That made Nigeria, where most people live on less than $2 a day, the 17th-biggest market for champagne in the world. Porsche opened its first Nigerian dealership in Lagos this month. It also plans to open in the capital, Abuja.

Bespoke African Brands - The Rising Stars of Luxury

Bridging the gap between traditional craftsmanship and luxury, high-end African brands are out to make a global impression. From clothing and jewellery to wine and tea, refined luxury is increasingly being packaged and sold by Africans.

The market for luxury African goods was once the preserve of rich expatriates and tourists, but as incomes soar across the continent, retailers report a growing appetite among local buyers and continental consumption is rising steadily.

Consumer spending in Africa is set to increase from $860bn in 2008 to $1.4trn in 2020 according to a report by consultancy firm McKinsey. The number of households with disposable income is due to grow by 50% over the next 10 years to 128m.

The growing number of high-net-worth individuals in Africa offers a compelling opportunity for proprietors of luxury brands seeking new markets. Read more...

The Wealth Report found the number of high-net-worth individuals in Africa rose to 100,000 last year. While China's economic slowdown has worried some luxury brands, others have been quick to take note of Africa's growth. Home-grown brands are taking the opportunity to establish themselves not only in Africa but on the global market.

Patrick Mavros, a Zimbabwean jewellery company, opened its flagship store in London in 2004. After 33 years of business, the company's clientele ranges from taxi drivers to film stars and heads of state. "African luxury is a rarity,"says Forbes Mavros, son of the brand's founder and head of the Mauritius atelier. "There are not many brands that have touched the international pulse and remained African in their identity."

Swaady Martin-Leke, the founder of YSWARA, a luxury tea brand with its headquarters in South Africa, also believes that it is important to maintain a country or region's heritage and culture when building a global brand. "If you look at European or Japanese luxury brands, you find the essence of the country of origin is in the detail," she says.

Euromonitor International revealed spending on luxury goods in South Africa rose from $628.5m in 2007 to more than $1bn in 2012. South Africa's global wine exports grew by nearly 40% between 2006 and 2012. Over the same period Kenya became its largest African importer of wine, buying 6.1m bottles in 2012. A prime example is Waterford Estate's "The Jem" 2007 bottles start from R680 ($80).

Martin-Leke believes that typical African luxury consumers, having travelled abroad, want products that reflect their identity. "They might want a Chanel watch, but they also want a beautiful couture ankara dress. "They have the money to buy Yves Saint Laurent, but they want African designers"

The Luxury Network

Strategy meets style when two masters of luxury join forces

When two leading luxury companies form a strategic collaboration, the results can only be extraordinary. LUXURY BRANDS, a niche global marketing firm and LIVEOUTLOUD, the all-encompassing luxury company, have joined forces to share their experience, expertise and services – making this influential pairing the final word in luxury brand marketing.

LIVEOUTLOUD has gone through some exciting expansions in the past year and its strategic partnership with LUXURY BRANDS is taking the business into a new sphere. “Niche and luxury brands occupy a unique position, which requires astute management and genuine marketing experience with high-end brands – like experiential and event marketing, which provide the best setting for more intimate contact with the consumer, and where the emphasis is on the quality of interaction as opposed to the quantity of interactions with the brand,” comments Michael Eilertsen, CEO of LIVEOUTLOUD.

LIVEOUTLOUD is the biggest, most comprehensive luxury lifestyle and marketing brand in Southern Africa, a company that speaks to sophisticated consumers through multiple touch points, such as its top-end publication, bespoke events and concierge travel service.

Working in symmetry to this, LUXURY BRANDS has been providing the niche luxury brand sector with proven marketing solutions and access to the highest net worth individuals in South Africa and abroad, and have managed events for the likes of Nelson Mandela, Elton John, The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

LUXURY BRANDS also recently jointly acquired the marketing rights for Africa for THE LUXURY NETWORK – The world’s leading luxury affinity marketing, partnership and Events group, boasting member brands such as Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, Vertu, Jimmy Choo, Embraer Jets and many more desirable top international luxury brands.

Today, luxury marketing is proving to be more and more of a specialist niche in the industry, especially factoring in current economic climate. All communication and brand interaction has to be strategically coordinated to create an engaging and lasting, multi-faceted, sensory experience.

“Luxury branding has always been about an intimate knowledge of your audience and how to create the right reputation. Defining luxury is as much an art as it is a skill, and experience in this market is paramount,” says Jeremy Nel, MD of LUXURY BRANDS.

Both of these luxury brands have a wealth of knowledge in providing the finest results for their esteemed clients, so whether approached to do market research, innovative company campaigns and launches, memorable events or other tailored projects, the combined experience and reputation of LIVEOUTLOUD and LUXURY BRANDS offers an impressive opportunity for any luxury brand.

Patek Philippe - Ladies First Perpetual Calendar

Because women love the notion of forever

Patek Philippe released their first Ladies Perpetual Calender Ref. 7140, at Baselworld 2012. Enriching the manufacturers collection of ladies' watches with an attractive newcomer that joins what is probably the world's most comprehensive portfolio of regularly produced complicated watches for women.

This exquisite timepiece is a grand complication that qualifies as an incarnation of eternity with its functionality, lasting value, and reliability across generations, timelessly elegant design, and enduring array of diamonds. It is an uplifting feeling to be able to think about one's great and great-great grandchildren when purchasing a Ref. 7140 Ladies First Perpetual Calendar.

The growing affinity of women with mechanical watches and complicated functions is among the particularly delightful trends in the domain of horology. Featuring an ultrathin split-seconds chronograph and an equally graceful minute repeater launched in very feminine versions. The complications ateliers spared no effort to endow this complicated timepiece with an irresistibly feminine personality.

The objective was accomplished with panache, as evidenced by a glance at the new Ref. 7140 Ladies First Perpetual Calendar. All of the elements of this elegant timepiece reflect feminine poise, from the classic round Calatrava case in 18K rose gold and the gracefully curved lugs to the shimmering creamy white dial, the interchangeable mink gray and royal purple alligator straps, the lovely bezel, and the clasp set with precious diamonds that deserve to be called a girl's best friend.

Despite its compact size, it presents its eight indications – hours, minutes, date, day of the week, month, leap-year cycle, 24-hour subdial, and moon phases – in a very clearly organized and easily legible configuration. This is due not least to the subtle contrast between the white opalescent dial and the hands, the applied Breguet numerals, the minute-marker pearls in 18K rose gold, and the discreetly elegant yet crisply readable calendar indications.

The 68 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds totalling approx. 0.68 ct. embrace the perpetual calendar dial, framing it like a precious treasure with sparkling intensity. But these readily visible assets not only underscore the beauty of this exceptional timepiece, they also bring its inner values to the fore. The watch comes with a solid-gold case back and an exchangeable sapphire-crystal display back that allows its owner to admire the magnificently designed and artistically decorated mechanical caliber.

This extraordinary timepiece designed for eternity is worn on a hand-stitched alligator strap with a prong buckle in 18K rose gold that is adorned with a further complement of 27 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds totalling about 0.20 ct. A snap back in 18K rose gold and interchangeable sapphire-crystal display back that is water-resistant to 30 meters.

It includes Travel Time models for two time zones, the World Time watch with 24 time zones, the famous Annual Calendar, grand complications such as minute repeaters and split-seconds chronographs as well as classic column-wheel chronographs Ladies First Chronograph, and now, finally, the first perpetual calendar for ladies.

In Southern Africa, Patek Philippe watches are exclusively sold through The Watch and Jewellery Gallery located at Shop 33, Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton, Johannesburg. For more information please contact the store on 011-784-259.

PANDORA Collection - Nostalgic Rock Vintage With Attitude!

PANDORA’s latest collection celebrates feminine beauty with a little edge and a lot of cool.

The theme this season is Nostalgic Rock, a genre of excitement and raw elegance. The new PANDORA collection evokes that spirit in a range of superbly hand-finished gold and silver jewellery with more options for creative adventures than ever before.

A brand new necklace concept allows for mixing and matching the elegant and stylish with the fresh and daring. Intricate patterns and new finishes combine the feel of a bygone era with the passion of today. Each new piece of jewellery ties in beautifully with the colours and themes of previous collections and can be combined with all-time favourites to create stunning new looks.

Necklaces
PANDORA proudly unveils a new concept: a new range of exquisite sterling silver necklaces – there are 20 new pieces in all – to combine into a multitude of luxurious layered looks that can be changed to fit any mood or style.

This exquisite selection includes long or short, multi-textured or simple, fine or chunky sterling silver chains that come with or without gemstones. Finishes include lustrous and shiny, edgy and oxidised or black rhodium silver. All necklaces can be linked together with PANDORA’s new S-lock. Simply slip the ends onto the necklace and secure with one of this season’s 14k gold clips or with one of the sterling silver clips, whose raw edgy shapes and finishes evoke a Nostalgic Rock attitude. The small S-lock can hold up to four necklaces, and the large S-lock as many as eight.

One new necklace design stands out and adds to the styling options: the necklace features anchor points along the chain to attach different clips. Make a real statement, and clip on this season’s new sterling silver clips in raw, sculptural shapes such as perfect spheres and angular hexagons, and finishes that epitomise the Nostalgic Rock theme. Alternatively, pick a favourite decorative clip from a PANDORA charm bracelet or from the traditional designs available in the ever-popular bracelet range.

Bracelets
PANDORA’s charm bracelets exemplify the brand: Women can design personal bracelets by selecting pieces that signify the treasured, unforgettable moments of their lives. That tradition continues with some exciting twists.

Style PANDORA bracelets with this season’s new charms and decorative clips that come in distinctive shapes. The latest release includes oxidised sterling silver pieces, some flashing with zirconia and new oversized charms.

There are decorative clips inspired by Nostalgic Rock, including one in sterling silver that playfully mimics studs on a leather jacket. There are special double clips to anchor two or more bracelets together. In addition two new leather bracelets with either silver or 14k gold clasps add the colours pink and purple to the range of leather and textile bracelets.

Also new this season: two new sterling silver bracelets with a clean, modern look. One bracelet holds just one decorative clip, the other as many as five. This bracelet takes any clip – choose from the traditional collection or add some rock edge with the new geometric clips.

Earrings
As with all PANDORA jewellery, earrings are hand-finished, made with solid 14k gold and sterling silver and interchangeable to mix and match for a personal style. PANDORA earrings come to life through the creativity of those who wear them.

Create an earring set with studs, hooks or hoops in sterling silver or 14k gold and go from there. Assemble unique pieces by mixing and matching exquisite gemstones, pearls or black oxidised stars to get this season’s Nostalgic Rock look.

PANDORA also introduces earrings, pendants and dangle charms with intricate patterns inspired by delicate lace. These pieces are created in 14k solid gold and feature cultured freshwater pearls or brilliant-cut diamonds. Wear them on their own for a classic look or layer them for a more edgy style.

Rings
PANDORA rings form a cascade of gold, sterling silver and gemstones. This is hand-finished jewellery that is superbly designed and truly versatile. Wear the rings together in ever-changing combinations to create looks that are both lively and glamorous.

The latest collection brings new designs in solid 14k gold, sterling silver and black oxidised sterling silver with colourful gemstones. Florally inspired designs with a raw edgy twist bring statement rings that add depth to the collection. Large cocktail rings with a floral setting come with amethyst or grey moonstone and are perfect for stacking with this season’s finer rings – an oxidised silver band of flowers, or a fluted silver ring decorated with five delicate cultured freshwater pearls. Two large coloured-pearl rings, in 14k gold, round out the luxurious end of the new collection.

PANDORA’s rings work beautifully with other pieces of PANDORA jewellery, such as rings in the exceptional LovePods collection. Wear LovePods rings individually or stack them in an interlocking row. For the first time, the rings are available in three types of gold to create a stunning set. Combine new 18k rose gold rings with pieces in 18k white and yellow gold. Match the rings with LovePods designs such as earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pendants, decorated with colourful gemstones or brilliant-cut diamonds.

Watches
Unforgettable moments shine through with the PANDORA Black Crown Diamond watches. Each watch is decorated with a black diamond - an exclusive signature feature that ties in perfectly with this season’s Nostalgic Rock theme.

PANDORA introduces two new watch designs: ICON and Liquid Silver. ICON watches feature a variety of stylish bezels and straps that can be put together and switched to create a unique, personal watch for any occasion. Liquid Silver watches are inspired by PANDORA’s line of bangles, rings and earrings with sculptural silhouettes and pure shapes.

The watches are available with black, white or purple straps and dials in black, white or glossy silver. All PANDORA watches bring together Swiss-made durability, quality and precision with this season’s edgy rock aesthetic. It’s time to put an exquisite finishing touch on your PANDORA style.
