Nederburg Auction evolves into Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction

Oude Libertas

The historic Nederburg Auction launched in 1975, has entered an exciting new chapter by evolving into the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction which will be held in October this year.

The strategic move is in line with Distell’s new premium and fine wine company, Libertas Vineyards and Estates, whose purpose is to support and drive the upselling and premiumisation of South African wine on the global stage.

CEO of Libertas Vineyards and Estates, Kay Nash, says the collective vision is to build an industry platform widening world wide access to South African fine wines and by doing so escalate the desirability and collectability of these wines.

“In order to achieve this, we believe that the auction can be a catalyst for change. By growing an industry platform for fine wine producers and leveraging our 44 years of experience and investment we will collectively raise interest in South African fine and rare wines and attract existing, and new local and global buyers.”

Kay Nash CEO of Libertas Vineyards and Estates

“Collectors and investors are increasingly seeking out wines that have a story and a strong connection to a particular place or vineyard. They seek rarity, quality and provenance which the line-up of fine and rare wines will certainly deliver on.”

The Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction will introduce exciting changes, including moving from Nederburg to the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch and a new selection process and format. The final wine selection will be curated by a panel of expert judges with strict criteria focussing on quality, rarity and collectability as the main drivers. Philanthropy will remain a key element of the auctions DNA and focus for all the stakeholders.

The Auction will also collaborate with British Auction House Christie’s, by introducing a Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction Superlot at their Fine and Rare Wine Auction held in London later this year.

“This platform will provide participating South African producers significant exposure to new buyers and by partnering with Christie’s, we will benefit from their expertise and gravitas in the category and plan to build our presence at global events in a phased approach.”

The amphitheatre at Oude Libertas

To ensure the auction delivers a platform that is inclusive and transparent, significant input has been sought from industry influencers, leaders and buyers. Nash says “the response has been inspiring.”

“In April we hosted a group of individuals, some who have and some who have never participated in the Nederburg Auction before, to provide input for the new format. The feedback has been constructive and extremely positive.”

“The change is all about collaboration and inclusivity. We will continue to work together with the producers, industry and buyers to deliver success for all stakeholders.”

“We anticipate that the producers represented at the new format auction will be diverse and the changed selection criteria and reinvented fundamental ethos of the auction will encourage participation by South Africa’s finest producers.”

Libertas Vineyards and Estates is physically housed at the historic Oude Libertas.

The Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction will take place on 18 and 19 October at the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch. Tickets will be by invitation and we encourage potential buyers to contact Dalene Steyn on DSteyn@libertasvineyards.co.za to register their interest.

KWV The Centenary - SA’s most exclusive brandy

Fresh off celebrating its centennial year in 2018. In honour of this milestone, KWV has also introduced an upgrade to its brandy range, ringing in the next 100 years.

A SOUTH AFRICAN FIRST
Its CEO, Boyce Lloyd, has promised to continue to delight the consumer with bold and refreshing innovations that reflect the treasured brand value of KWV and continuing its 100-year-old trailblazing tradition.

In its most recent display of innovation, KWV has released SA’s most exclusive brandy: KWV The Centenary. This special blend includes its rarest and best brandies spanning the company and SA’s brandy-making history.

Guarded and entrusted by many generations of brandy masters, The Centenary includes some of the very first brandy made by KWV back in 1926, along with brandy from the only barrel rescued from a fire that razed KWV’s historic cellars in 1942. The balance is completed with KWV’s rarest brandies, averaging 42 years of age.

LIMITED EDITION BUYERS' PACKAGE
Only 100 bottles of this extraordinary blend have been produced for release, and at R100,000 a bottle, KWV is hoping to invest in the future of brandy making.

“Recognising the need for sustainable growth in the industry, KWV has committed to donate R20,000 per bottle sold to a bursary fund to invest in the future of brandy making,” says Nuno Fernandes, spirits marketing executive at KWV.

The Cape Grace hotel's Signal restaurant
In honour of this investment, KWV – in partnership with the five-star luxury Cape Grace hotel – is also offering an exclusive buyers’ package: business-class flights; a one-night stay at the premium Cape Grace property situated on a private quay between Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and the serene yacht marina; VIP chauffeur services; and an exclusive tasting with De Bod where buyers will sample KWV’s premium potstill range, including the KWV Nexus and The Centenary.

A PROUD PEDIGREE
Master distiller Pieter de Bod is decidedly proud of KWV’s The Centenary - the pinnacle of 100 years distilling “craftmanship, dedication, patience and trust”. Meticulously blended by KWV’s internationally acclaimed distilling team, it has the pedigree of the KWV stable – a global reputation of consistent quality.

It carries titles for Brandy/Cognac Producer of the Year from the International Spirits Challenge and the Worldwide Best Brandy Producer Trophy title from the International Wine and Spirit Competition – a strong foundation that makes the launch of a product as exclusive as The Centenary a solid investment.

KWV has been at the centre of innovation and development in the spirits and wine industry for the past 100 years, and its latest gem, The Centenary, is more than just an investment in your cabinet.

The Bisquit Cognac Perfect Serve

The House of Bisquit Cognac has developed a special serving ritual that demonstrates the best way to enjoy cognac.  The tradition of consuming cognac with many ice cubes or swirling it in the palm of a warm hand does not bring out the best in the cognac for ultimate enjoyment.

The most crucial element of the ritual is the temperature at which the cognac is consumed. In order to ensure the perfect temperature, the Cuillère de Richesse (Spoon of Richness) is employed. The design of the spoon includes a small stainless steel plate upon which an ice cube is placed before cognac is poured gently over it.

The temperature at which cognac is served is important for two main reasons: “Warming cognac is not appropriate as increasing the temperature of the cognac makes the lighter aromas more volatile - they evaporate too quickly, leaving you with an unbalanced glass of cognac. Another consequence of warming cognac is that when the alcohol is warm, it has an aggressive taste - when it is served at the correct temperature, the alcohol is less aggressive, smoother and rounder.” commented Lahouratate.

The Bisquit Cognac Perfect Serve ritual is simple, yet sophisticated:

Step 1: Place the Cuillère de Richesse over the cognac glass.
Step 2: Gently place one ice cube onto the stainless steel plate.
Step 3: Slowly pour a serving of Bisquit V.S.O.P over the ice cube. The Cuillère de Richesse will guide the cognac into the glass through the opening in the spoon.
Step 4: Enjoy your cognac at the perfect temperature!

When using the Perfect Serve, it reduces the amount of time that the cognac is in contact with the ice cube, quickly reducing the temperature but avoiding the dilution of the cognac.
“We are not dictating how everyone should enjoy their cognac, it is after all a matter of personal taste. However, should you wish to become a true Bisquit Cognac connoisseur, our style of cognacs is best suited to our Perfect Serve ritual which brings the cognac to the optimal temperature for maximum enjoyment.” concluded Lahouratate.

The Bisquit Cognac Perfect Serve Kit consists of the Cuillère de Richesse, a bottle of Bisquit V.S.O.P, pair of tongs, four cognac glasses, a pouring spout and a porcelain dish for ice. This kit will not be available for sale to the public but can be enjoyed in selected outlets upon request in the near future. Keep your eyes on the Bisquit Cognac Facebook page for more information.

Glen Grant 10yo Single Malt Scotch a Whisky Bible 2013 Award Winner

According to Jim Murray, who tastes, evaluates and grades the 4 500 whiskies alone, this year’s 10-year-old has excelled to the point of “taking the breath away.” Having been described as one of the most consistent whiskies for a long time, he says it is obvious that Glen Grant’s very high quality ex-bourbon casks and uniquely crisp barley are “meeting with rare panache.” “This is a tough category to win, but (Glen Grant) has done it with aplomb.”

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible for 2013 is the world’s leading whisky guide and Glen Grant 10-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the winner of the 10 Years & Under (Multiple Casks) Category. While each whisky is scored in four key areas, namely nose, taste, finish and balance, the Glen Grant 10-year-old achieved an impressive 95%. Murray says the whisky is “rich in colour” and “lingers with a soft, almond finish.”

Since the founding of Glen Grant in 1840, the distillery has been famous for its light, crisp whiskies, its history of innovation and tradition, and its beautiful buildings and gardens on the banks of the River Spey in northeastern Scotland. The tall slender stills and purifiers, which were introduced by James “The Major” Grant over a century ago, continue to give the whiskies a distinctive fresh flavour and clean colour.

Interestingly, “The Major” was the first person in the Scottish Highlands to own a car and Glen Grant was the first distillery to have electric light. In keeping with its pioneering past and progressive future, it is fitting that the Duke of Rothesay (more commonly known as HRH Prince Charles of Wales) recently opened the distillery’s state-of-the-art biomass plant and whisky-bottling centre.

The biomass plant is designed to recycle the waste from the whisky-making process as animal feed, and creates electricity by burning draff and woodchips. The bottling centre produces 2 000 bottles an hour, mainly for export to Asia and Europe.

Glen Grant is one of the largest selling single malt whiskies in the world today. In South Africa, it is distributed by Edward Snell & Co. and is available at all leading liquor retail outlets.

Hennessy VSOP Kyrios

MEET A LEGEND

This year, Hennessy Cognac is proud to announce the launch of the new collector edition bottle, Kyrios, the key to unlock the codes of the legendary world of Hennessy V.SO.P. As a tribute to the brands history and origin in 1817, the V.S.O.P bottle is presented with a stylish new matte carbon covering and unique codes which tell its rich story.

Every aspect of this exceptional collector’s bottle has a significant connotation – starting with the 3D label, adorned with 1817, giving the impression that the date is inside the bottle, an integral component of its beginning. A beginning which dates back centuries when a request was made by the future king of England, George IV for ‘Very Superior Old Pale Cognac’.

The codes extend to the grapes, a symbol of the vineyards and grandeur of the House of Hennessy – clearly illustrating the ancestral savoir-faire, elaborate craftsmanship and the extreme care which is taken in the creation of this high-quality product.

Along with the new silhouette, launched last year by esteemed automobile designer, Chris Bangle, the appearance of this limited edition bottle takes on two dimensions with its startling carbon-grey colour. First of which is the technical dimension, currently used in the automobile industry for fast concept cars and secondly an artistic dimension.

The copper appearance used in the label design is a reminder of the pot stills, a deep tint which evokes centuries of distillation, adding more elegance and style to the carafe. Lastly, the emblematic ‘bras armé’ reflects the long history of Hennessy, an essential part of the seal for more than two centuries. Now engraved in the glass, it highlights the constant search of quality.

Within the sophisticated Kyrios bottle, the Hennessy V.S.O.P Cognac has remained unchanged. Recognised for its harmonious and well-structured blend, it is characterised by its gradual blend of about 60 eaux-de-vie taken from the four best growing areas in the Cognac region, slowly matured in old barrels from which most of the tannin has been extracted.

With well-loved aromas, balance and long lasting finish, Hennessy V.S.O.P easily matches every tasting occasion, either enjoyed neat, on the rocks or in a refined cocktail.

South African Wines Join The Ranks of Royalty

Wine lovers will be thrilled to hear that six South African wines now form part of the exclusive ‘First Growths’ tastings, held by an international private members club, The Parmigiani White Club (TWC).

Each year this exclusive club conducts tastings all over the world and earlier this year, for the first time ever, South Africans were introduced to the ‘First Growth’ wines series. As the wine world is ever-evolving, today the term ‘First Growth’ has come to mean not only to Bordeaux wines, but indeed ‘wines of the most exceptional quality’.

The internationally acclaimed non-profit private members' club, TWC, confirmed that the six South African wines that professional tasters selected to form part of the ‘First Growths’ series are, MR de Compostella 2008 (97), Vergelegen V 2007 (95), Vilafonté Series M 2009 (95), Waterford Estate The Jem 2007 (96), Epicurean 2006 (95) and Columella 2009 (95), and will all be introduced on the tasting nights. These will accompany the legendary Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia.

“It comes as no surprise that South African wines are ranked among these illustrious ‘First Growths’ wines and we are delighted to host two tastings in SA this year. We promise to those attending that the evenings will be unforgettable, glittering black tie experiences,” says CEO of the exclusive Wine Club International, Malene Meisner.

“Wine lovers have recognised that wines from the South African Cape Winelands rank among the best in the world and guests will have the exclusive opportunity to taste some of the world’s best wines, champagnes and sparkling wines as ‘First Growths’ are considered among the most sought-after wines in the world,” Meisner concludes.

Over the past few years some of the top South African restaurants and hotels have regularly found themselves among the top 50 restaurants in the world. It is thus gratifying to know that South Africa’s culinary expertise is keeping abreast of the country’s winemaking expertise. After all, wine and food are inseparable twins.

The Parmigiani White Club will travel to Vienna, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Istanbul, Mumbai, Zurich, London, Madrid, Chicago, New York and Burgundy, where the six SA wines will be introduced to wine tasters and wine lovers from all over the world. The Club looks forward to hosting these elite tastings in Johannesburg on the 25th October and in Cape Town on the 26th and 27th October.
