National Heritage Day

Along the pathway to the Tumulus building, stop to have a look at the site of an archaeological excavation. The Stone Age site has been excavated since October 2005 by scientists from the University of the Witwatersrand. The early stone tools found here belong to the Acheulean period and include handaxes and cleavers.

Heritage Day a public holiday created in 1996, a day in which all are encouraged to celebrate their cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that make up the nation of South Africa.

In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former President Nelson Mandela stated:
"When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation."

I will be focussing on World Heritage Sites found in 141 countries, South Africa boasts eight. September is Heritage Month and I will take a look at some of these sites including the Cradle of Humankind which hosts Maropeng, the Tumulus which leads visitors back into the past and forward towards the future. Also to be seen at the Cradle of Humankind are the Sterkfontein Caves where Robert Broom discovered "Mrs Ples". Another site of interest in this general area, is Swartkrans where to date more than 200 huminid specimens have been discovered.

The Eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa are:

iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Robben Island, Cradle of Humankind, uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, Cape Floral Region, Vredefort Dome and Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape. This country also has 16 national heritage sites and several provincial sites.

In the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divisions, an initiative by Braai4Heritage calls upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbecue) on Heritage day.  Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu,  was made the National Spokesperson for National "Braai Day" in 2007.

Rolex Oyster Collection

Rolex is pleased to present a wide selection of new watches in its OYSTER collection. These new timepieces illustrate three key Rolex themes: innovation, evolution and creativity, with prestigious models enhanced by elegant gem settings and new jewelled dials.

INNOVATION

A prime example of Rolex watchmaking expertise, the Oyster Perpetual SKY-DWELLER is an entirely new watch combining practical functions, ease of use and the timeless elegance of classic Rolex lines. Designed with global travellers in mind, its dual time zone display is intuitive to read and easy to operate. Equipped with an annual calendar that automatically adjusts the date at the end of months with 30 and 31 days – thanks to a patented design that ensures outstanding reliability for this type of function – as well as a particularly practical interface for setting the watch: the patented rotatable RING COMMAND bezel.

A distillation of Rolex innovation, the SKY-DWELLER incorporates no fewer than 14 patents, five of which are brand new. It is equipped with the new calibre 9001, a mechanical selfwinding movement developed and manufactured by Rolex, certified as a chronometer, with a 72-hour power reserve. Available in 18 ct yellow, white or EVEROSE gold, in a 42 mm case, the SKY-DWELLER is an embodiment of the precision, reliability and prestige of Rolex watches.

EVOLUTION

Archetype of the diver’s watch, the Oyster Perpetual SUBMARINER is now equipped with a black ceramic CERACHROM bezel insert, a dial with large CHROMALIGHT hour markers and hands for exceptional legibility in the dark, and a subtly redesigned 40 mm case in particularly corrosion-resistant 904L stainless steel. It is fitted with a new solid-link OYSTER bracelet in 904L steel with a new-generation OYSTERLOCK safety clasp which is effortless to use and prevents accidental opening.

This clasp includes the GLIDELOCK extension system, allowing adjustment of the bracelet length for comfortable wear over a diving suit. Its calibre 3130, a self-winding mechanical movement certified as a chronometer, is now equipped with a paramagnetic blue PARACHROM hairspring developed and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. This updated SUBMARINER is firmly in the lineage of the historical model launched in 1953, and raises the bar for robustness, legibility and reliability, thus reinforcing its status as a legendary watch with a timeless personality.

The new 40 mm version of the Oyster Perpetual YACHT-MASTER in ROLESIUM, a combination of steel and platinum, also benefits from the latest Rolex innovations in terms of the ergonomics, comfort and reliability of the bracelet, clasp and bezel. Its emblematic bidirectional rotatable graduated bezel in 950 platinum with raised numerals has been entirely rethought to include a new, even more robust rotation system.

The CHROMALIGHT display, an exclusive Rolex feature, ensures long-lasting luminescence for exceptional legibility in the dark. This new YACHT-MASTER features a case in 904L stainless steel on an OYSTER bracelet with a newgeneration OYSTERLOCK safety clasp. The elegant solid-link bracelet offers much-appreciated comfort and ease of use. It also includes the EASYLINK rapid extension link, an ingenious system that conveniently allows the wearer to lengthen the bracelet by about 5 mm for added comfort in any circumstance.

The ideal watch for sailing enthusiasts, this new YACHT-MASTER sports a navy blue dial. An evolution of one of the greatest contemporary watch classics, the Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST II is available for the first time in an all-steel version with a smooth bezel. This new model joins the range of DATEJUST II watches, introduced in 2009 in ROLESOR with a fluted 18 ct gold bezel. With its 41 mm case, the DATEJUST II is a larger interpretation of the Oyster.

Perpetual DATEJUST, the emblematic Rolex model with date magnified by a CYCLOPS lens on the crystal. This new version in 904L stainless steel with powerful dynamic lines impresses with its allure and technical qualities. It is fitted with an OYSTER bracelet with the EASYLINK rapid extension link and a new silver colour dial with large luminescent hour markers.

CREATIVITY

This jewelled version of the Oyster Perpetual COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA in 18 ct yellow or white gold is resplendent with a bezel entirely set with an array of sapphires in rainbow colours. The lugs and crown guard of the case are set with sparkling diamonds. The black lacquer dial is adorned with diamond-set hour markers and GOLD CRYSTALS gold counters whose particular reflections are achieved by an exclusive process.

A sublime feminine variation, a new jewelled interpretation of the 36 mm Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST in 18ct EVEROSE gold bears a black lacquer dial with a contemporary motif set with 262 diamonds, providing an entrancing contrast of light and shadow. Its bezel is set with 60 baguette-cut diamonds, and 120 brilliant-cut diamonds around the edge. The 18 ct EVEROSE gold, an exclusive alloy created by Rolex and cast in its own foundry, shines with a unique brilliance and is distinguished by an incomparable hue resulting from the addition of a touch of platinum, the noblest of precious metals.

Finally, an array of prestigious models enhanced with new gem-set dials showcases rubies and pays tribute to the beauty of diamonds and precious stones: hour markers with baguette cut rubies at 6 and 9 o’clock on the chocolate colour dial of the 36 mm Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE model in 18 ct EVEROSE gold with a fluted bezel; or similar hour markers on the champagne colour dial of the 41 mm Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE II in 18 ct yellow gold with a bezel entirely set with baguette-cut diamonds; and rubies again on delicately gem-set ladies’ models, like the 26 mm Oyster Perpetual LADY-DATEJUST in 18 ct yellow gold with a fluted bezel and a champagne colour dial on which a large VI at 6 o’clock shimmers with 11 rubies; or on the 31 mm Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST LADY 31 in 18 ct yellow gold whose champagne colour dial, surrounded by a bezel beautifully set with 48 brilliant-cut diamonds, bears a large 6 and 9, each set with 16 rubies.

Innovation, evolution, creativity: each of the new models in the Oyster collection presented at BASELWORLD 2012 is, in its own way, an exemplary product of an integrated and independent watchmaker that draws on uncompromising values and unequalled means to tirelessly perpetuate its passion for perfection.

Emirates Broadens Its African Network with Lusaka and Harare

Extending its reach into Africa with the launch of a new linked service to Lusaka and Harare. Now flying to 22 points within Africa, Emirates airlines will connect Zambia and Zimbabwe to key markets across Europe, the Far East, Australasia and the Indian Subcontinent.

To support the linked service, Emirates will promote Zambia and Zimbabwe’s tourism attractions, including Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River, game reserves and safaris, in advertising campaigns executed across the airline’s global network.

“Zambia and Zimbabwe are both important emerging business and industrial centres, with economies that are projected to grow by over five per cent annually during the coming years,” said Nabil Sultan, Divisional Senior Vice President Revenue Optimisation & Distribution. “Emirates’ new service will play a significant role in supporting this growth by connecting Lusaka and Harare to our worldwide network, opening new conduits for trade, investment and tourism.”

Upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, Emirates’ inaugural Flight 713 was greeted by a traditional water cannon salute. "Emirates’ decision to operate to Lusaka represents new economic doors being opened to our country. The fact that this airline, which is successful on all continents, is entering markets like ours as part of its expansion plans is clear evidence of excellent future prospects for Zambia and Zambians,” said the Honourable Given Lubinda, the Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Emirates services to Lusaka will be a huge boost to its tourism industry, helping to support the Zambia Tourism Board’s target for increasing visitor arrivals by 22.5 percent to one million visitors in 2012. The onward connection to Harare, operated by Zimbabwean Captain Ca Busiso Ndlovu, also received a warm welcome at Harare International Airport.

"The arrival of Emirates to Zimbabwe is a very significant development for the market. We welcome the entrance of a truly global airline; with an extensive network, large fleet and great reputation for quality service which will greatly improve choice and connectivity for Zimbabwean travelers," said the Honourable Nicholas Goche, Zimbabwean Minister of Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development. "Emirates will bring greater capacity and fare competitiveness, which will certainly lead to traffic growth to and from Zimbabwe."

Emirates’ services to Harare will support the Tourism Ministry’s projections that the sector will contribute over US$5 billion to the country’s economy by 2015. Following the launch of Lusaka and Harare, Emirates started services to Dallas, Texas on 2nd February and Seattle on 1st March, Ho Chi Minh City on 4th June and Barcelona on 3rd July. Reuben’s Culinary Weekends in the Franschhoek Valley

Food doesn’t have to be fancy and extravagant to be delicious. If you have a really good peach or apricot, you want to retain that taste, so you should do as little as possible to it. Too much messing about with food makes it lose its identity, its essence. It shows a lack of respect for the items you’re cooking. I believe in looking for new ways to do things, but simplicity is always the key.”
– Reuben Riffel Chef de Cuisine

With a passion for creating fine yet uncomplicated cuisine and a laid back setting to match, you’re invited to experience Reuben’s. The menu offers staunch favourites as well as specials that are updated daily to take advantage of the finest ingredients on the market. With Restraurants located in Roberston and The One & Only Cape Town . The premier venue is in Franschhoek, the heart of South Africa’s winelands, its wine list is the envy of any connoisseur. Reuben’s restaurant and bar combines all the ingredients for the perfect get together.

Cook with the masterchef.

If you’ re a culinary enthusiast, enjoy being wined & dined and want to cook with Chef Reuben Riffel , go ahead and treat a group of friends, family or colleagues. Everyone will be treated as a VIP and no expense is spared. These courses are well planned for the master chefs among us and for anyone wanting to get away from microwave meals. Sign up for Culinary Weekends in the Franschhoek valley.

Meet the New Executive Chef at Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel

A gourmet gem of the Breede River Valley takes pride in lending culinary bliss to this 5-star boutique hotel in the eponymous town of Robertson. Reuben’s at The Robertson sizzles with a newly appointed Executive Chef, Emile Fortuin. Protégé of South Africa’s best-known culinary success stories, Reuben Riffel, Emile stays true to his mentor’s simple food philosophy. Giving adventurous taste to traditional Cape cuisine by inffusing it with his home-grown tastes and produce he experienced while growing up.

Matriculating in 2006, Emile was discovered while working briefly at the Bread and Wine Restaurant in Franschhoek by its owner Susan Huxter, who also owns world-renowned Le Quartier Francais luxury hotel. Without any formal training and culinary qualifications under his belt.

“I was peeping through a wooden fence to see what the charcuterie chef, Neil Jewell, was doing and Susan saw me and offered me an in-house training job at her 5-star hotel on the spot. During that period I met the likes of world-renowned culinary genius, Margot Janse, Executive Chef of Le Quartier Français and Chef Chris Erasmus of Pierneef á La Motte and this is then when my passion for cooking really ignited,” shares an enthused chef.

In search of an adventurous culinary career, Emile joined Reuben’s Restaurant in Franschhoek in 2008 working his way from barman to assistant chef before filling the shoes of Executive Chef. “I still remember the day when I asked Reuben if I could join his kitchen team. He handed me a chef’s jacket and a 10 kg bag of potatoes and he told me that I have ten minutes to peel all the potatoes and seven days to prove myself worthy in his kitchen. I’m forever grateful for the life-changing opportunity he gave me,” adds Emile.

Today, with the guidance of Reuben as concept chef, Emile is ready to set his own course at the luxurious ten-suite hotel. Fully aware of the latest gastronomic trends, he aims to create a feast of unpretentious dishes with a sustainable conscience by using the finest indigenous and heritage ingredients – and transforming them into contemporary sensations that saturate the senses.

“Today, sustainability is created and supported by having your own vegetable and herb garden or even breeding your own fish, and then serving it in your restaurant. It is the way to go. I explore with new meat cuts and reduce our carbon footprint by relying heavily on local produce,” adds Emile.

Emile’s innovative cuisine enhances the overall Reuben’s dining experience by offering an elegant yet country-style affair with a touch of local flare. Guests dining at the relaxed, bistro-style venue can look forward to a myriad of hearty temptations on his ever-changing Winter Menu. In full view of the chef at work from his open-plan kitchen.

Think rustic Green Bean Stew, Warm Beef Tongue Salad with black pudding or an earthy Mushroom Consommé. Carnivores will love his Braised Oxtail with Mascarpone soft polenta and crispy beacon while his signature Pork Belly aims to please palates all season long. His Potato Spinach Cakes served with a traditional Cape-style tomato smoortjie (a thick smothering-styled sauce) highlights a comforting vegetarian lineup. Mood-uplifting desserts include a Grand Marnier Orange soufflé enriched with Klipdrift gold chocolate foam and a warm Jan Ellis pudding with spiced custard and Bulgarian yoghurt ice cream.

During the winter months, open daily for breakfast and dinner whilst private lunch and dinner parties and group bookings can also be reserved. Bookings are essential. To reserve your table contact the restaurant at Tel: (+27)23 626 7200 or email reservations@therobertsonsmallhotel.com.

The Vineyard Hotel & Spa

The Vineyard Hotel & Spa are hosting their popular wine paired dinner evenings until October 2012.

The series of wine-paired events launched with the five-course Partners’ Dinner on 27 April.
The hotel’s five wine partners, Waterford, Meerlust, Simonsig, Warwick and Klein Constantia showcased their favourite wines on the evening, which were expertly paired to various culinary delights by the hotel’s experienced Sous Chef, Chris Law.

Roy Davies, General Manager of the Vineyard Hotel & Spa explains, “We will host two wine-paired dinner events each month, where winemakers from farms such as Paul Cluver and Iona Vineyards, Creation,  Muratie, Hartenberg, Oldenburg, Mooiplaas, Anthonij Rupert, The Cardinal, Migliarina and Haut Espoir will have the opportunity to present their wines. Constantia Valley Wines ends off the season in style with a spectacular dinner, showcasing up to nine wines.”

“To avoid disappointment, guests are encouraged to book well in advance for the dinners, as they are extremely popular with both local and resident guests,” says Davies. “Diners can enjoy live light entertainment throughout the evening, and lucky draws are held at each event to add to the experience. So whether you are looking for a romantic evening out, or a night spent with a group of friends – the experience is bound to be a memorable one.”

Each wine-paired dinner is either four- or five-course, depending on the wines served. “Ahead of each event we conduct a tasting where The Square’s sous chef, the winemaker, select members of the media as well as the hotels food and wine committee get together. It’s an opportunity to taste the wines and to debate, deliberate and explore a menu specifically paired to the wines in question,”
Davies explained. “The combination of the tasting session and then experiencing the end product – the actual dinner – is a fascinating journey, allowing us to ensure that the end-product is always of the absolute highest standard, something we believe our guests will experience with every paired event.”

The cost of the dinners is R265 pp for the four-course and R315 pp for the five-course. Davies and his team have also put together exclusive stay-over packages that include the dinner for guests attending the events. For the five-course dinner, a single room is  R950, while a double room is R800 per person sharing. For the four-course paired dinner, a single room is R900 and a double room is R750 per person sharing.

46664 Fashion Winter 2012 Collection

46664 – four, double six, six four - was the prison number given to Nelson Mandela when he was imprisoned for life in 1964.

Launched in August 2011, 46664 Fashion includes a range of T-shirts that make arresting visual statements around Mr Nelson Mandela’s humanitarian legacy. The Statement T’s draw iconic inspiration from intimate access by the brand’s design team to archive material housed in the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. The Statement T’s in the 2012 Winter 46664 Fashion range, currently in store, include one with a stunning repeated graphic image of Madiba in a boxing stance, symbolising the spirit of perseverance that is so intrinsic to South Africa’s people.

These Tee's also echoes the core inspiration of the 2012 Winter range - Mandela’s passion for boxing – as does “Freedom Gym”, a powerful Statement T that speaks to the need for individuals to remain active in the fight against injustices. The rest of the range includes superb graphic renditions of key aspects of Mr Mandela’s humanitarian legacy including “Dignity”, “Democracy”, ‘Mentor” and many others. One of the standouts is “46664 It’s In Our Hands: Consciousness on Cloth” – the T’s graphic based around the struggle posters that were so prevalent during the fight against apartheid that so many South Africans and others took part in.

The latest range from the social impact brand is complemented by a number of eye-catching and thought-provoking statement Ts by design team member, Craig Native. These wearable T's help express the values that are key to Madiba’s humanitarian legacy  founded by the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2002 using his Robben Island prisoner number, 466/64.

The 2012 Winter range with men, women and children’s clothing and apparel delivers nothing short of a knockout fashion punch. The collection sees the core 46664 Fashion design team of Chris Vogelpoel and Barbara Tosalli, deliver a spirited range that’s high on colour and energy and also carries plenty of the brand’s now signature details that talk to both 46664 Fashion’s African roots and the ongoing humanitarian work of 46664.

“Winter 2012 is hinged around our bold and colourful shirts which feature contrast styling details,” explains Vogelpoel. “We have also extended our golfers into more colour blocking and featuring new details to discover.” A bold addition to 46664 Fashion’s Winter 2012 range are snappy, zipper track tops and fleece hoodies – both featuring strong colour and eclectic detail. Custom fitted Chinos in stone, navy and tobacco as well as denim jeans with coloured studs and rivets and shweshwe pocketing and waistband lining complement the range offering.

A striking feature of the menswear range is 46664 Fashion’s knitwear including bold striped cardigans, comfort fit cardigans in purple and orange and a cable button through with full contrast placket. 46664 Fashion’s Womenswear 2012 range is built around rich, soulful tones and textures – an inspirational mix of gold, strawberry, chartreuse, tangerine, cerise, grape and apple green resulting in a spirited colour palette that’s ideal for day or evening wear. “We also have African-inspired prints and vivid patterns that are softened by sultry lines and flowing fabrics,” says Tosalli.

About 46664

46664 itself has grown into a multi-faceted global campaign. It's mission is to encompass all areas of Mr Mandela's humanitarian legacy (in SA, Africa, and the world) - including supporting projects like Nelson Mandela International Day - calling on individuals worldwide to give 67 minutes of their time to take action that inspires change.

Created as a partnership between Seardel/Brand ID and 46664, as part of a concerted move towards building its sustainability/self-sufficiency. Overseen by the 46664 Board it ensures that a percentage of 46664 Fashion's turnover is given to 46664 to further the humanitarian legacy of its founder, Mr Nelson Mandela. The board identifies projects that will benefit from funds raised and other commercial endeavours undertaken by 46664 and will not accrue to any individual.
