The
Garden Route will set the scene for one of the world’s biggest golfing
events ever to take place on South African soil. The Links at
Fancourt plays host to the Volvo Golf Champions between 19
and 22 January 2012. Recognised as one of the world’s finest golfing
events, locals, tourists, fans and celebrities alike will gather in
George to watch the world’s top golfing talent in action.
Players
already confirmed for the event include local superstars, Charl
Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen and Retief Goosen. The international
contingent includes Colin Montgomerie, Matteo Manassero, Tom Lewis,
Thomas Bjorn, Paul Casey and the current open champion Darren Clarke,
while Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Martin
Kaymer, Rory Mcllroy and Miguel Angel Jimenez are eligible to play, and
are still to confirm their attendance.
Featuring only those players who won on the 2011 European Tour and who have 10 or more European Tour career wins, the event will chase a first prize of approximately R3.8 million. With a total prize fund in the region of R22 million, the Volvo Golf Champions at Fancourt will be the first solely-sanctioned European Tour event of 2012.
The event will offer spectators a four day feast of golf in the spectacular surrounds of The Links, recently voted the number one course in South Africa by Golf Digest. Since opening in 2000, The Links has consistently featured amongst the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World,
and has hosted many prestigious golf tournaments, including the
Presidents Cup, Ladies World Cup, SA Open and Berenberg Bank Senior
Masters.
The Volvo Golf Champions can now proudly be added to this
list, and ranks right up there with The Presidents Cup in terms of the
quality of field that will grace the fairways of The Links, with no less
than 40 European Tour Champions participating.
South African charity Star for Life will benefit from the event, receiving 25% of the event ticket and programme sales revenue. Star for Life
is a HIV prevention programme with the desire to ‘build attitudes and
change behaviours in the youth, and empowering them to realize their
dreams of a better future’.
Tickets for the Volvo Golf Champions are available from Computicket,
as well as at the gates (main Fancourt entrance) daily. Gates will open at 07:30
on the Friday, and at 09:00 on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
