The contrasts are mind-boggling, but the trip is well worth it.
The country’s motto of “A world in one country” was absolutely
accurate. South Africans knew how to welcome guests and how to do it with luxury
and panache found no where else on the African continent.
Luxury hotels
in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria were elegant; bush camps such
as in Giants Castle National Park provided comfortable accommodations in
thatch-roofed buildings. Enclaves of Zulu who maintained their culture also welcomed
visitors, tourists to the Little Karoo region could stay at a working
ostrich farm such as the famed Safari Ostrich Farm in Oudtshorn. They
could even ride an ostrich, an experience that would be talked about for
years to come.
