National Heritage Day

Along the pathway to the Tumulus building, stop to have a look at the site of an archaeological excavation. The Stone Age site has been excavated since October 2005 by scientists from the University of the Witwatersrand. The early stone tools found here belong to the Acheulean period and include handaxes and cleavers.

Heritage Day a public holiday created in 1996, a day in which all are encouraged to celebrate their cultural traditions in the wider context of the great diversity of cultures, beliefs, and traditions that make up the nation of South Africa.

In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former President Nelson Mandela stated:
"When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation."

I will be focussing on World Heritage Sites found in 141 countries, South Africa boasts eight. September is Heritage Month and I will take a look at some of these sites including the Cradle of Humankind which hosts Maropeng, the Tumulus which leads visitors back into the past and forward towards the future. Also to be seen at the Cradle of Humankind are the Sterkfontein Caves where Robert Broom discovered "Mrs Ples". Another site of interest in this general area, is Swartkrans where to date more than 200 huminid specimens have been discovered.

The Eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa are:

iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Robben Island, Cradle of Humankind, uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, Cape Floral Region, Vredefort Dome and Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape. This country also has 16 national heritage sites and several provincial sites.

In the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divisions, an initiative by Braai4Heritage calls upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbecue) on Heritage day.  Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu,  was made the National Spokesperson for National "Braai Day" in 2007.

About Georgini

Hailing from Down Under, Georgini is an exciting jewellery brand recently launched in South Africa. It features in the top three jewellery brands in Australia, and is now taking on the international jewellery industry.

Inspired from a small jewellery party to launch her own collection, Gina Kougias decided to create the Georgini brand 7 years ago. Georgini jewellery is crafted from the finest 925 sterling silver which is then plated with rhodium to give it the look of white gold or platinum jewellery.

The jewellery is mainly set with cubic zirconias but also using semi precious stones such as black onyx and freshwater pearls. Georgini is well known for its “black & white” designs and every seasonal collection usually features an eclectic mix of both modern and classic black & white pieces.

Georgini designs with most age groups in mind but essentially it caters to the “fashion forward woman” - she might be a young fresh faced teenager, an executive businesswoman or an elegant grandmother. The brand offers couture style & quality that every woman can afford. Creating luxurious yet affordable & accessible pieces, unique in their design element portraying the essence of Georgini style. Each piece is designed with an intention to create a versatile range that includes a distinctive accessory for every occasion.

Nearly 20,000 seats in 40 Restaurants for Cape Town’s first Restaurant Week

Cape Town’s first Restaurant Week, which will run from 22 to 29 September, will have nearly 20,000 seats available in 40 of the area’s finest restaurants. Participating restaurants include the Planet Restaurant at the Mount Nelson, The Round House Restaurant, Pigalle, The Duchess of Wisbeach, Roca Restaurant at Dieu Donne Estate and Haute Cabrière, in Franschhoek. A complete list of participating restaurants in the greater Cape Town area can be viewed at www.restaurantweek.co.za.

Restaurant Week has been a success around the world and was brought to South Africa by DiningCity.com, the world’s leading online, real time, restaurant reservation and review service. This will become a biannual event, expanding soon from Cape Town to include Johannesburg and Durban.

“South Africa has world-class restaurants and I wanted to let everyone in on this secret!” said Tertius van Oosthuyzen of DiningCity. “Plus, it’s about time we had a powerful, trusted platform like DiningCity to help us browse our favourite local spots, do real time restaurant bookings and to get people around the world to notice all the good food being served here. This is a global platform, one of the most recognizable in the world for fine dining.”

The Restaurant Week concept is simple: guests can enjoy a three course lunch or dinner created by the top chefs at the finest restaurants for R125 or R200, respectively. Restaurants enjoying a DiningCity star will cost an extra R50.

“The idea is to give diners that extra incentive, that little push, they need to try the restaurants they’ve always wanted to visit, but were held back for some reason,” said Tertius. “Restaurant Week diners can browse our website to find the restaurant of their dreams, see if a table is available at the time they want, then make their booking in real time. It’s all about access.” It is easy to book online on www.restaurantweek.co.za and all last minute spots will be in a news feed on the site and at www.twitter.com/RSeats

Tertius is on a mission to tell the world about what our local restaurants have to offer. “South African restaurants are really special in their own way, because of the amazing way they blend ingredients and influences. And as for location and ambience, I don’t think anything can compare to the restaurants we have in the Wine Region. That is beyond added value.”

The timing is particularly good with Cape Townians just venturing out of hibernation said Tertius. “Restaurant Weeks are about high quality dining experiences at a great price and there’s something a little bit celebratory about the whole thing too. It’s really an event for the whole city!”

Rolex Oyster Collection

Rolex is pleased to present a wide selection of new watches in its OYSTER collection. These new timepieces illustrate three key Rolex themes: innovation, evolution and creativity, with prestigious models enhanced by elegant gem settings and new jewelled dials.

INNOVATION

A prime example of Rolex watchmaking expertise, the Oyster Perpetual SKY-DWELLER is an entirely new watch combining practical functions, ease of use and the timeless elegance of classic Rolex lines. Designed with global travellers in mind, its dual time zone display is intuitive to read and easy to operate. Equipped with an annual calendar that automatically adjusts the date at the end of months with 30 and 31 days – thanks to a patented design that ensures outstanding reliability for this type of function – as well as a particularly practical interface for setting the watch: the patented rotatable RING COMMAND bezel.

A distillation of Rolex innovation, the SKY-DWELLER incorporates no fewer than 14 patents, five of which are brand new. It is equipped with the new calibre 9001, a mechanical selfwinding movement developed and manufactured by Rolex, certified as a chronometer, with a 72-hour power reserve. Available in 18 ct yellow, white or EVEROSE gold, in a 42 mm case, the SKY-DWELLER is an embodiment of the precision, reliability and prestige of Rolex watches.

EVOLUTION

Archetype of the diver’s watch, the Oyster Perpetual SUBMARINER is now equipped with a black ceramic CERACHROM bezel insert, a dial with large CHROMALIGHT hour markers and hands for exceptional legibility in the dark, and a subtly redesigned 40 mm case in particularly corrosion-resistant 904L stainless steel. It is fitted with a new solid-link OYSTER bracelet in 904L steel with a new-generation OYSTERLOCK safety clasp which is effortless to use and prevents accidental opening.

This clasp includes the GLIDELOCK extension system, allowing adjustment of the bracelet length for comfortable wear over a diving suit. Its calibre 3130, a self-winding mechanical movement certified as a chronometer, is now equipped with a paramagnetic blue PARACHROM hairspring developed and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. This updated SUBMARINER is firmly in the lineage of the historical model launched in 1953, and raises the bar for robustness, legibility and reliability, thus reinforcing its status as a legendary watch with a timeless personality.

The new 40 mm version of the Oyster Perpetual YACHT-MASTER in ROLESIUM, a combination of steel and platinum, also benefits from the latest Rolex innovations in terms of the ergonomics, comfort and reliability of the bracelet, clasp and bezel. Its emblematic bidirectional rotatable graduated bezel in 950 platinum with raised numerals has been entirely rethought to include a new, even more robust rotation system.

The CHROMALIGHT display, an exclusive Rolex feature, ensures long-lasting luminescence for exceptional legibility in the dark. This new YACHT-MASTER features a case in 904L stainless steel on an OYSTER bracelet with a newgeneration OYSTERLOCK safety clasp. The elegant solid-link bracelet offers much-appreciated comfort and ease of use. It also includes the EASYLINK rapid extension link, an ingenious system that conveniently allows the wearer to lengthen the bracelet by about 5 mm for added comfort in any circumstance.

The ideal watch for sailing enthusiasts, this new YACHT-MASTER sports a navy blue dial. An evolution of one of the greatest contemporary watch classics, the Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST II is available for the first time in an all-steel version with a smooth bezel. This new model joins the range of DATEJUST II watches, introduced in 2009 in ROLESOR with a fluted 18 ct gold bezel. With its 41 mm case, the DATEJUST II is a larger interpretation of the Oyster.

Perpetual DATEJUST, the emblematic Rolex model with date magnified by a CYCLOPS lens on the crystal. This new version in 904L stainless steel with powerful dynamic lines impresses with its allure and technical qualities. It is fitted with an OYSTER bracelet with the EASYLINK rapid extension link and a new silver colour dial with large luminescent hour markers.

CREATIVITY

This jewelled version of the Oyster Perpetual COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA in 18 ct yellow or white gold is resplendent with a bezel entirely set with an array of sapphires in rainbow colours. The lugs and crown guard of the case are set with sparkling diamonds. The black lacquer dial is adorned with diamond-set hour markers and GOLD CRYSTALS gold counters whose particular reflections are achieved by an exclusive process.

A sublime feminine variation, a new jewelled interpretation of the 36 mm Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST in 18ct EVEROSE gold bears a black lacquer dial with a contemporary motif set with 262 diamonds, providing an entrancing contrast of light and shadow. Its bezel is set with 60 baguette-cut diamonds, and 120 brilliant-cut diamonds around the edge. The 18 ct EVEROSE gold, an exclusive alloy created by Rolex and cast in its own foundry, shines with a unique brilliance and is distinguished by an incomparable hue resulting from the addition of a touch of platinum, the noblest of precious metals.

Finally, an array of prestigious models enhanced with new gem-set dials showcases rubies and pays tribute to the beauty of diamonds and precious stones: hour markers with baguette cut rubies at 6 and 9 o’clock on the chocolate colour dial of the 36 mm Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE model in 18 ct EVEROSE gold with a fluted bezel; or similar hour markers on the champagne colour dial of the 41 mm Oyster Perpetual DAY-DATE II in 18 ct yellow gold with a bezel entirely set with baguette-cut diamonds; and rubies again on delicately gem-set ladies’ models, like the 26 mm Oyster Perpetual LADY-DATEJUST in 18 ct yellow gold with a fluted bezel and a champagne colour dial on which a large VI at 6 o’clock shimmers with 11 rubies; or on the 31 mm Oyster Perpetual DATEJUST LADY 31 in 18 ct yellow gold whose champagne colour dial, surrounded by a bezel beautifully set with 48 brilliant-cut diamonds, bears a large 6 and 9, each set with 16 rubies.

Innovation, evolution, creativity: each of the new models in the Oyster collection presented at BASELWORLD 2012 is, in its own way, an exemplary product of an integrated and independent watchmaker that draws on uncompromising values and unequalled means to tirelessly perpetuate its passion for perfection.

Editorial - September 2012

This month kicked off with the lavish Bentley Event at Cape Town's most exclusive venue The Reserve. I will post about the venue soon. Next up a wine and whales weekend at the De Hoop Nature Reserve. Our Luxe Property theme continues with "A touch of Africa". This months highlighted event is Cape Town’s First Restaurant Week with DiningCity SA on 22 to 29 September which  launched at the Mount Nelson Hotel.

I'll be introducing Luxe Tech later this month and will add some more to Automobiles. Last month I had the tremendous pleasure of being invited to the opening night of Raymonda at The Artscape Opera House and a visit to Franschhoek for the debut of La Clé des Montagnes' Luxury Villa's adding to the Cape Winelands category.

Next months MUST ATTEND EVENT is ‘The world of First Growths’ tastings, held by an international private members club, The Parmigiani White Club (TWC). The six South African wines forming part of this exclusive event are  MR de Compostella 2008 (97), Vergelegen V 2007 (95), Vilafonté Series M 2009 (95), Waterford Estate The Jem 2007 (96), Epicurean 2006 (95) and Columella 2009 (95).

The State of Opulence in Africa

The golden continent and the ethics of luxury.

It is a struggle to reconcile the dichotomy of deep social concerns for our African continent, rife with poverty, and the light-hearted revelry and opulence associated with the luxury sector. This is particularly true as the global financial crisis has not yet loosened its grip, currency volatility remains erratic and unemployment figures remain high - these are uncertain and difficult times.

Outside of consumption patterns, in South Africa there is a tendency to downplay the employment opportunities generated by the luxury sector. The most obvious sectors to generate employment through luxury goods and services are the mining industry, through which a myriad of jewelry businesses are generated, and tourism where high-end hospitality and exclusive safaris show South Africa at its best. But aside from these two monoliths there are in fact many other areas of growth.

The multi-billion Rand boat building industry employs over 3000 permanent employees that has seen South Africa recognized for its high-end catamarans worldwide. BMW is a leader in the manufacturing of luxury cars and has recently announced further investment of R2 billion into 'BMW World Plant Rosslyn', its South African facility. They anticipate that the upgraded plant will be capable of producing up to 60 000 units per annum.

Global luxury forecasts for 2012 seem optimistic, particularly for those businesses focused on growth markets. The 2011 Global Wealth Report by Credit Suisse comments that in many respects, South Africa is the model for many other African economies. Household wealth has grown vigorously over the last decade, quadrupling in value from US$8,400 in 2000 to US$34,300 in mid 2011. Global Wealth overall is showing an upturn led by increased wealth in South Africa, China, India, Brazil, Australia, Chile and Indonesia.

That is not to say that the volume of HNW individuals is homogenous, indeed it varies radically between these rapid emerging markets - China boasts 1,017,000 US Dollar millionaires (and 5,000 with a wealth of over US$50 million) and South Africa sports a comparatively meagre 71,000 US Dollar millionaires. Fortunately we too have a few exemplary billionaires who have travelled to space, built luxury empires, not to mention the obvious financial and mining empires.

Small and medium enterprises, well recognized in academic and policy literature for their economic and social importance, are perhaps where our craft-centric culture and the luxury industry could interest a government seeking job creation. There are many exemplary domestic luxury brands generating employment as well as being ambassadors for Brand SA. Avoova, for example, creates functional art and collectible items from the best fragments of ostrich eggshell that are carefully laid down as a fine veneered finish used as a decoration for objet d'art from bowls and bars to billionaires yachts. In doing so they support 40 artisans in the Karoo. For leather goods, Cape Cobra Leathercraft, who employs ninety people from the local community.

A new generation of designers has been born that has taken our raw materials and transformed them into world-class lines that are in global demand. Hanneli Rupert, daughter of Johann Rupert, has recently launched Okapi. The energetic, talented young designer, is a firm supporter of the potential job creation through luxury on our golden continent and as such she has committed to supporting local manufacturing and where necessary purchasing machinery to do so. She uses local suppliers in the creation of her new exotic handbag range with signature horns and has sourced rare leathers and materials from across Africa.

One often overlooks the impact of high-end consumption and disregards the more obvious arenas such as the gourmet sector, championed by master-chefs like Margot Janse, Reuben Riffel and Giorgio Nava, that employs and trains staff for numerous restaurants. Beyond fine foods, consumers are presented with an ever greater number of fine wines and spirits from farms and niche distilleries, that are reaching a new price echelon, whilst creating employment in the winelands and broader drinks sector.

South African fashion is achieving international acclaim - from Gavin Rajah to Malcolm Kluk, home grown labels have not only a solid local following but are being welcomed to the world run way from Paris Couture to New York Fashion Week. The work by Precious Moloi Motsepe, wife of billionaire Patrice Motsepe, in creating Africa Fashion International has seen the emergence and strengthening of many African couturiers and labels.

South Africa boasts a wealth of diamonds and gold but the bulk of manufacturing and finishing happens internationally. Johannesburg based African Romance has invested in local diamond finishing and the training of diamond polishers to retain value in South Africa. With the mining industry constituting one third of GDP, an estimated 50% of the world's gold reserves in SA and a huge 10 million carats annually of diamonds mined annually (with 90% of the diamonds being exported), it stands to reason that we should look at methods to retain value locally.

The Southern Africa Luxury Association, through the SALA Artisan Accelerator, has recently worked with Keith White to develop an initiative to build up the expertise of black jewelry designers, taking them through an apprenticeship to become master jewelers. De Beers Shining Lights Awards is another noteworthy program supporting the industry that has recognized his talents and those of other jewelers using our natural resources for world-class finished products.

Luxury eco-tourism in South Africa is globally revered and companies like the Mantis Collection and &Beyond are spearheading a sustainable, considerate view of engaging with nature at the top level.

Businesses which take a more thoughtful view of luxury and succeed in carving out a unique niche for themselves, with consideration for people, planet and profit, will be firmly entrenched on the road to success by adhering to a new definition of local luxury that exemplifies 'Proudly South African'.

Issued by the Southern African Luxury Association.
